The six-day count down until the EPIC recording session with 60 singers from London Voices for THE MOONS SYMPHONY at the famous ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS

These lyrics highlight a phrase and a book of the same name written by Frank White and published in 1987 — THE OVERVIEW EFFECT.

THE OVERVIEW EFFECT is where White coins this phrase, and, in his words, it is a tool to help conceptualize something most people have not yet experienced. Naming the experience for the astronauts about seeing Earth from space helps communicate the idea more easily.

In my many conversations with Nicole, she would explain that when astronauts return to Earth, they struggle to find words to communicate their profound experiences. And during those exchanges, I thought; “Here’s a chance for music to take over, when words fail..”

But what I found fascinating was Frank White's thoughts about the power of symbols and how they work on a subconscious level, often going unnoticed by the conscious mind; referring to the Earth Rise image says:

𝑰𝒕 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒔𝒚𝒎𝒃𝒐𝒍 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝒂𝒍𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒚 𝒃𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂 𝒒𝒖𝒊𝒆𝒕 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒅𝒓𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒖𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔

And why this resonated with me is because I was turning to the discipline of music and used that EARTH RISE symbol to craft my musical response and Anthem for Earth.

So, just before we listen, I wanted to share its simple story, which features a boy's solo — the first time in the symphony that introduces the sound of a child's voice representing the children of the future and (pause) the fragility of Earth.

But soon, the boy's solo is joined by a full choir to emphasize that the children of this world are not alone in this planetary plight and as united species, we will find solutions to face challenges in this world together.
