Wednesday's trip is 🆆🅸🅻🅳 — join us as we explore Io's Sublimating Sulfur Dioxide Frost.

Further fascinating discoveries from the Galileo spacecraft revealed a surface dominated by sulfur and sulfur dioxide frost. At room temperature, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is usually a gas but exists as frost on Io's surface.

Scientists have recently concluded using ground-based telescopes that Io's atmosphere is in a constant state of collapse and repair.

Experience Io's sublimating sulfur dioxide frost when it enters Jupiters shadows every 42 hours

Approximately every 42 hours when Io is in Jupiter's shadow, the atmosphere deflates when the temperature drops, and sulfur dioxide gas sublimates to frost and falls back to Io's surface as fresh frozen sulfur.

After the eclipse has passed and Io re-emerges into the sunlight, the atmosphere redevelops, and the subliming sulfur dioxide frost quickly turns back into gas form.

This process, along with a layer of volcanic dust, paints Io's surface and contributes to its characteristic colour scheme of yellow, red, white, black, and green.

The red and black markings on Io show the areas of recent volcanic activity and currently erupting plume at the Pele Patera, distinguished by the prominent red ring surrounding this volcanic site.
